Tehran says veiled bombing threats forced country to put sites underground

Last September, when Iran’s uranium enrichment plant buried inside a mountain near the holy city of Qum was revealed, the episode cast light on a wider pattern: Over the past decade, Iran has quietly hidden an increasingly large part of its atomic complex in networks of tunnels and bunkers across the country.

In doing so, American government and private experts say, Iran has achieved a double purpose. Not only has it shielded its infrastructure from military attack in warrens of dense rock, but it has further obscured the scale and nature of its notoriously opaque nuclear effort. The discovery of the Qum plant only heightened fears about other undeclared sites.

Now, with the passing of President Obama’s year-end deadline for diplomatic progress, that cloak of invisibility has emerged as something of a stealth weapon, complicating the West’s military and geopolitical calculus.

Meet Leo

According to my new favorite reference guide Physics For Future Presidents the Low Earth orbit (LEO) is commonly used for spy satellites. The reason is simple, to see best, you need to be close….The problem with LEO is that you fly past any spot on the ground at about 5 miles per second. Even at an altitude of 100 miles, you can observe that spot for less than a minute. (In 60 seconds you go 300 miles.)  The 1 to 2 minutes available to LEO satellites is a very short time to spy. In fact, many countries that want to hide secret operations from the United States keep track of the positions of our spy satellites (they look up the information on the Internet) and make sure their operations are covered or hidden during the brief times the spy satellite is close enough to take a photo.  Don’t get angry when your CIA director can’t get the photo you want. It’s not his fault, but the fault of physics, and maybe of the hobbyists who measure and post the satellite orbits.

In an underground tunnel the dirt that once filled it is not there, so the force of gravity on the surface is reduced compared to nearby regions. It is a small effect, but it is measurable, and it has practical importance for future presidents. Gravimeters driven on trucks have detected such weakened gravity and discovered clandestine tunnels under the border between the US and Mexico-tunnels used for smuggling drugs and people. Using other techniques, the US has also found clandestine tunnels under the demilitarized zone separating North Korea from South Korea. Some of these tunnels were large enough to allow passage of a tank, and North Korea apparently built them to use in the event of war with South Korea. Needless to say, we would like to know if there are any other undiscovered tunnels of this kind, and scientists are attempting to use gravity as a way of detecting them.
